The Rehoboth Beach Public Library is preparing for a major transformation that will upgrade its downtown location while ensuring it continues to serve the community effectively.
With over 45,000 visitors each year, including residents, workers, and tourists, the library plays a vital role in the heart of Rehoboth Beach.
It offers those a place to work, study, read, play, learn, and grow in the safety of a beautiful library.
The upcoming renovation and the addition of a second site will modernize the facility, create flexible community spaces, and improve accessibility for everyone.
Downtown Renovation Plans
The downtown library, located at 226 Rehoboth Avenue, has begun undergoing phased renovations starting at the end of last year in 2025, with completion expected in late 2026 or early 2027 dependent on various factors, such as campaign success, weather, etc.
The goal is to modernize the building while keeping it operational for the community as much as possible even while undergoing construction phases.
Key features of the renovation include:
- Upgrading the HVAC system.
- Enhancing electrical infrastructure and internet capabilities.
- Implementing ADA-compliant improvements.
- Creating 2 meeting rooms
- Developing a downstairs lobby
- Creating 3 new study rooms
- Implementing children’s & adult’s collections
- Having a circulation desk
Construction is being managed by Whiting Turner, who was hired in November 2025 to oversee the project and ensure it is completed efficiently.
Renovations will be completed in phases so that the library can remain open with intermittent pauses for visitors and locals alike.

Temporary Service Pauses and Community Adjustments
To prepare for the renovation, the downtown library temporarily paused services from early December 2025 until December 8th.
During this period, items were not available for checkout, and the book drop was closed.
The library adjusted due dates and recommended patrons temporarily redirect book holds to nearby locations, such as Lewes or South Coastal libraries. Digital collections remain accessible throughout construction.
Additionally, the sidewalk in front of the library will be partially closed at various points during the project.
City officials are coordinating with the library and the construction company to maintain pedestrian-friendly and accessible routes, especially during the busy summer season.
Demolition work began on December 18th, 2025, to remove selected walls and make way for new study rooms, marking the first tangible step in the renovation process.
Funding the Renovation
This project is made possible through a combination of funding sources:
- $3 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and a State of Delaware Bond Bill.
- $2 million being raised through a dedicated community campaign.
- Contributions from generous local donors.
Library officials emphasize that these funds will allow for comprehensive upgrades while maintaining core services for the community throughout construction.
As part of the fundraising effort, naming opportunities are available for select spaces and features within the renovated library, providing donors with a meaningful way to support the project while leaving a lasting legacy.
Details on giving levels and naming opportunities can be found in their website.

Second Location on Warrington Road
In addition to the downtown renovation, the Rehoboth Beach Public Library has purchased a five-acre parcel on Warrington Road, west of Route 1, across from Beebe Healthcare Specialty Surgical Hospital.
The library went to settlement on the property on November 19th after purchasing the site earlier this year, formally securing the land for future expansion.
This new location will provide ample parking and the potential to expand library programs and services beyond the downtown area, addressing long-standing space and parking limitations at the current facility.
These challenges are especially pronounced during the busy summer season and when hosting large community events.
The purchase, which cost approximately $2 million, reflects the library’s commitment to growing with the community and meeting evolving needs amid Sussex County’s rapid population growth.
The library placed $500,000 down on the property and financed the remainder, with plans to begin a dedicated fundraising campaign to cover the full cost before construction begins.
Donations are currently accepted through the library’s website.

Plans for the second location are still in the early stages, but it is expected to complement the downtown library rather than replace it.
Once operational, the Warrington Road facility is anticipated to offer the same core services as the downtown location, with some programs and events potentially offered simultaneously at both sites.
The new location is expected to serve as a more accessible hub for learning, work, and community engagement, particularly for residents who live outside the immediate downtown area.
Community Impact
The renovations and expansion demonstrate the library’s dedication to maintaining a vibrant community space.
Residents, workers, and visitors will benefit from modernized facilities, improved accessibility, and additional program spaces.
By keeping the downtown library open as much as possible and adding a second site, the library ensures its services remain at the heart of Rehoboth Beach life.
