A familiar Coastal Delaware destination has entered a whole new era!
Freeman Arts Pavilion celebrated the opening of its reimagined venue recently, unveiling a major transformation designed to welcome bigger audiences, bring in more performances, and create an even better experience for a summer night of live entertainment.
A New Look for Freeman Arts Pavilion
At the center of the 5-acre campus is a new 42-foot-tall permanent stage with upgraded lighting, sound technology, and significantly more performance space than the pavilion’s previous wooden stage.
Guests can now choose from several ways to enjoy a show, including reserved seating near the stage, standing room on the floor, bowl seating, boxes, terraces, and lawn seating.
The redesigned Grand Green rises nearly 30 feet from front to back to provide better sightlines throughout the venue.

More Than Just a New Stage
The transformation extends throughout the campus, with paved paths, improved accessibility, additional accessible seating, and an assistive listening system among the upgrades.
The Lower Lawn continues to give guests a place to grab dinner and drinks before a show, with The Canteen and a redesigned Food Truck Court adding to the experience.
Local artists also perform on the Lower Lawn before the evening’s main act takes the stage.
The project was designed to preserve the relaxed outdoor atmosphere Freeman is known for while giving the venue room to host larger audiences and expand its programming.

The New Stage Is Already in Action
Freeman Arts Pavilion officially kicked off its 2026 season on July 8 with Matteo Bocelli’s Falling in Love World Tour, marking the first season on the new permanent stage.
The expanded venue is giving Freeman more room to build out its programming throughout the season, with a calendar that stretches well beyond concerts to include comedy, dance, theater, workshops, family programming, festivals, and other special events.
The current schedule continues into December, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to experience the new space for themselves.
The transformation is also expected to help create more opportunities for the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation’s Arts Education program. With the larger venue and extended season, the pavilion is aiming to welcome more than 150,000 audience members annually.

A Vision Years in the Making
Freeman Arts Pavilion is part of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, the nonprofit founded by Michelle Freeman in 2007 following the death of her husband, Joshua Freeman, in a helicopter crash the previous year.
During the July 1 celebration, Freeman raised a toast to her late husband and his parents, Carl and Virginia Freeman, recognizing the family behind the vision that helped make the pavilion possible.
The venue has also become an important part of the local economy.
According to the foundation, every $1 spent by Freeman Arts Pavilion generates an estimated $1.90 for the local economy, while each visitor is estimated to contribute an additional $102 per day during their time in the area.
