The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is one of those Coastal Delaware experiences that feels like more than just getting from one place to another.
It connects Lewes, Delaware, and Cape May, New Jersey, with a scenic ride across Delaware Bay, giving you water views, fresh air, wildlife sightings, and a much better alternative to spending hours on the highway.
A Scenic Crossing Between Two Historic Seaside Towns
The ferry travels 17 miles across Delaware Bay, linking two coastal towns with plenty of history, charm, and things to do on both sides of the water.
It operates year round and carries vehicles, cyclists, and foot passengers between the Lewes Ferry Terminal in Delaware and the Cape May Ferry Terminal in New Jersey.
Each terminal has free parking, dining, outdoor spaces with water views, restrooms, gift shops, and seasonal entertainment.
For anyone bringing a vehicle, the process starts at vehicle check-in near the toll booths.
Walk-on passengers can park for free and head into the terminal to purchase or pick up tickets before boarding.
What the Ride Is Like
The crossing takes about 85 minutes, which gives you enough time to slow down, grab something to eat or drink, and enjoy the open water before reaching the other side.
Along the way, passengers can take in views of working harbors, historic lighthouses, fishing boats, and coastal wildlife.
Osprey, pelicans, seabirds, bottlenose dolphins, and even the occasional whale can be spotted during the trip.
Onboard, you can relax inside with air-conditioned lounges, comfortable seating, food, drinks, and WiFi, or head outside to the open-air decks for the best bay views.
Each vessel can carry up to 100 vehicles and 800 passengers, with frequent daily departures and up to 14 sailings per day during peak season.

A Coastal Tradition Since 1964
The service was created after the Delaware River and Bay Authority was established in 1962 to oversee crossings of the Delaware River and Bay.
After growing interest in a direct connection between Delaware and New Jersey, the ferry began operating with vessels brought in from the Chesapeake Bay region.
More than six decades later, the ferry has carried over 17 million vehicles and more than 50 million passengers.
The modern fleet includes the M/V Cape Henlopen, M/V Delaware, and M/V New Jersey, all maintained by marine engineers and crews focused on safety, service, and keeping this regional tradition moving forward.
Why It Matters to the Region
The ferry is not just a scenic ride. It is a major connection point for tourism, commerce, and travel across the Delaware Bay.
It remains one of only two year-round direct vehicle crossings between New Jersey and Delaware, making it an important option for locals, visitors, road trippers, and anyone looking for a more relaxed way to travel between the two states.
A 2018 study found that each dollar invested in the ferry generated about $20 in economic activity for the surrounding communities, showing how much this route supports the coastal region on both sides of the bay.
What to Know Before You Go
The Lewes Ferry Terminal is located at 43 Cape Henlopen Drive in Lewes, Delaware.
The ticket office is open daily from 7:45 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. The terminal includes an ATM, free parking, accessible facilities, and restrooms.
Passengers traveling without a vehicle should arrive about 30 minutes before departure. Those bringing a vehicle should plan to arrive around 45 minutes early.
Reservations are highly encouraged, although a limited number of standby reservations are available at the toll booths at either terminal.
After vehicle check in, drivers are directed to a loading lane and can walk around the terminal grounds before boarding.

A Different Way to Experience Coastal Delaware
The Cape May Lewes Ferry is one of the easiest ways to make the trip itself feel like part of the plan.
You can use it for a day trip, a road trip, a weekend escape, a summer concert night, or just a different view of the coast. Between the bay crossing, the wildlife, the terminals, the onboard music, and the events happening at the Lewes Ferry Grounds, it gives you a lot more than a ride across the water.
