Sussex Technical High School has introduced a new process to help ninth-grade students choose their career and technical education (CTE) area of study.
The updated system is designed to better align students with programs that match their skills and interests, ensuring a stronger foundation for future success.
A More Structured Approach
- Sussex Tech offers 19 different CTE programs that range from web design to introductory courses on welding.
- Freshmen can explore six programs of their choice, with each course lasting four and a half weeks to make up the class time block for the entire school year.
- Previously, students selected their CTE path after completing these introductory rotations for their remaining future years in high school.
New Selection Process
The revised selection method now includes an application and an interview conducted by CTE teachers and advisory committee members to have the students get real interview process practice.
On March 13th, students participated in these interviews and attended workshops focusing on:
- Communication skills
- Team-building exercises
- Problem-solving strategies
These workshops aim to equip students with essential workplace and academic skills, setting them up for long-term success.
Building a Stronger Future
According to Dr. Daniell Bullock, Sussex Tech’s assistant principal, this refined process ensures students enter a CTE program that aligns with their strengths and career goals. Beyond technical training, the initiative emphasizes:
- Goal setting
- Resume development
- Interview techniques
By integrating these skills into the selection process, Sussex Tech is preparing students for industry certifications, work-based learning opportunities, and future career placements.
