The new Rehoboth Beach Patrol headquarters is entering its final stages as city lifeguards prepare to return to duty on May 17th.

According to project manager J.D. Bartlett of EDiS, inspections for the new facility will begin this week, starting with the newly installed elevator control panel and operational platform.

The project remains on schedule, with about two weeks of contingency built in for unexpected delays if they arise for any variable of reasons.

If all continues smoothly, lifeguards will start moving into the new building during the week of May 12th and getting prepared for the summer season.

By the time they begin their duties on May 17th, the facility should be fully functional, though a small punch list of items will remain, including:

  • Preliminary inspections expected to wrap up by end of April
  • Finishing items currently being installed
  • Geothermal unit startup and exterior work nearing completion

Budget Holding Steady

Current construction costs are estimated to be around $5.7 million for the entire project, which is about $750,000 above the initial $4.9 million contract.

Despite several pending change orders (totaling around $55,000) Bartlett says these can be covered by the remaining contingency funds.

Debate Over Added Insulation

A notable topic of discussion during the April 17th commissioners meeting was the recent installation of insulation between the lifeguard locker rooms and the meeting room on the second floor.

Commissioner Suzanne Goode voiced concerns over the added cost, but Mayor Stan Mills supported the decision, citing similar issues in city hall.

The insulation remains in place, with officials deciding not to remove it to avoid further expenses.
