The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) invites families to participate in the 39th Annual Youth Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This free event offers a chance for kids to enjoy a day outdoors while learning about fishing and conservation.

A Fun Way to Learn and Compete

Held at three public freshwater ponds across Delaware, the tournament is open to children ages 4 through 15.

In our area, the tournament will be held at the local pond in Sussex County, known as Blockhouse Pond in Lewes.

Young anglers will compete to reel in the heaviest catch, with trophies awarded to top performers in each county and one overall state winner.

DNRP will have tournament weighmasters onsite at the pond to weigh catches for participants, and determine each county’s top catch and age group titles, as well as the title of overall state winner.

The winners will be recognized during a ceremony at the Delaware State Fair in July.

Preregistration is required and must be completed by Friday, May 23 in order to participate.

The event will be held rain or shine, making it a reliable plan for an early summer Saturday.

More Than Just a Competition

The Youth Fishing Tournament is about more than just the biggest catch.

Established to introduce children to fishing, the tournament promotes the catch-and-release method and fosters a love of nature.

DNREC’s Fish and Wildlife Division and the Delaware Natural Resources Police ensure the event is both educational and safe for all participants.

  • Location: Blockhouse Pond in Lewes (Sussex County), Akridge Scout Reservation (Kent County), and Lums Pond (New Castle County)
