Lewes is getting a brand-new playground, and it’s shaping up to be a standout attraction!
The new play area at Canalfront Park features a striking sailing ship as its centerpiece, promising fun for children while enhancing safety and accessibility.
Exciting Features Await
- Sailing Ship Play Structure – Complete with a small sliding board and designated sitting areas.
- Improved Accessibility – Designed for safer and more inclusive play.
- Enhanced Landscaping & Drainage – Ensuring a well-maintained and inviting space for families.
When Will It Open?
The installation of the ship and other equipment is already complete. However, the final touches—including filling, grading, and landscaping—are still in progress.
The major hold-up? The safety surface can only be poured when temperatures remain above 50 degrees for seven consecutive days, even at night.
If all goes according to plan, the playground should be ready in April.
Investment in the Community
This exciting upgrade comes with a price tag just under $400,000.
The city secured a $125,000 grant from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Outdoor Recreation, Parks, and Trails Program, in addition to the recent application for an additional $100,000 grant.
