Milton Town Council is set to hold a special meeting Monday, April 28, to review critical reports related to the town’s proposed $1.6 million purchase of six parcels on Magnolia and Broad streets.
The town has entered a conditional sales agreement, with a 60-day due diligence period, to acquire the 2-acre site for potential municipal development.
Proposed Use of the Property
Town officials are exploring the possibility of building a 26,000-square-foot municipal facility on the site.
Plans for the new building include:
- Police department headquarters
- Offices for planning and code enforcement
- A town council meeting space
- A public meeting facility
The property, which includes former Councilwoman Leah Betts’ home at 113 Magnolia St., is mostly zoned as town center, allowing for diverse uses including government buildings.
Engineering and Environmental Assessments
Surveying the parcels proved challenging due to a lack of visible boundary markers, but field work is now complete. Surveyors are finalizing accurate property line descriptions for deed preparation.
Soil testing has revealed typical conditions for the area:
- Magnolia Street: Wet soils and a history of flooding
- Mulberry and Broad Streets: Clean, dry soils suitable for development
Town Manager Kristy Rogers noted that no surprises have been found so far, and the reports are nearing completion.
What’s Next?
The finalized package, which will include soil analysis, site plans, and survey data, will be presented to the council during the April 28 meeting.
Based on the findings, council members will determine whether to move forward with the land acquisition and subsequent development plans.
