The town of Milton is bringing art, safety, and community together this month with the painting of two new crosswalks at the intersection of Federal and Mulberry streets.
Scheduled for April 21st and 22nd, this project is part of an ongoing initiative to improve pedestrian safety and enhance the town’s small-town charm.
A Community-Powered Project
Led by Councilwoman Randi Meredith, who first launched the painted crosswalk program in 2022, the initiative continues with strong volunteer support.
The painting will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day (weather permitting).
Volunteers are welcome to drop in throughout the day, with those interested in taping the lines asked to arrive at 7:30 a.m. with a pocket knife in hand.
Details include:
- Crosswalks located at Federal and Mulberry streets
- Painting days: Monday, April 21st and Tuesday, April 22nd
- Volunteers needed: At least 20 for April 21st, more still helpful for April 22nd
- Midday lunch break around noon
Meredith emphasized that painting cannot begin unless temperatures exceed 50°F and there’s no rain forecast or residual moisture from the previous day.
If weather becomes an issue, the project will be rescheduled later that week.
Updates will be available on their website.
How It Works
This hands-on project involves serious effort:
- First two coats are scrubbed on with brushes
- Third and fourth coats are applied using rollers
- Duct tape must outline every line to comply with DelDOT regulations
Growing the Town’s Painted Crosswalk Network
With this project, the total number of painted crosswalks in Milton will reach 14.
Meredith noted that the Federal and Mulberry crosswalks were originally planned for 2022, but were delayed due to updated accessibility and crossing style improvements funded by a grant.
Backed once again by a grant from AARP, the project isn’t just about paint, it’s about building community, promoting safety, and celebrating the town’s identity as a creative and welcoming place.
“We are trying to maintain our small-town feel in the face of rapid population growth and land development,” Meredith said. “These artistic touches act as traffic-calming tools and reinforce our identity as an arts-focused community.”
