Lewes families have a brand-new reason to head outdoors! Canalfront Park’s updated playground is officially open, and it’s already drawing crowds from nearby towns for all the little ones to enjoy!
A Fresh Space for All
Opened on March 31st, the revamped playground has quickly become a favorite for local kids and parents.
One of its standout features is a large sailing ship structure that reflects Lewes’ maritime roots, along with slides, climbing walls, and other interactive equipment.
But this isn’t just about play—it’s about inclusion.
Five-year-old Zeke Clark, who uses a prosthetic leg following a 2023 accident, had no trouble navigating the equipment.
His mom, Maria Clark DeForrest, praised the playground’s accessibility.
“April is Limb Loss Awareness Month, and being able to accommodate anyone in a wheelchair or with physical differences is really important for the community,” she said.
A Community-Focused Vision
Assistant City Manager, Janet Reeves, emphasized that inclusivity was a driving force behind the redesign.
“We’ve ensured that the playground is accessible for children with different abilities,” she said. “It’s a safe and welcoming space for families to gather, socialize and enjoy the outdoors.”
The new playground cost just under $400,000 to build and will serve Lewes residents & visitors for years to come.
A $125,000 grant from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Trails Program helped make the project possible.
The city has also applied for an additional $100,000 grant to support the investment.
Locals Are Loving It
Michelle Hearn, a local parent, shared her excitement as she watched her daughter play: “It’s the talk of the town. We heard about it at a playground in Rehoboth. This is definitely better.”
Come See for Yourself
With its focus on safety, accessibility, and fun, Lewes’ newest playground is more than just a park—it’s a celebration of community and inclusion.
