Growth Across Coastal Delaware Highlights New Investments in Health Care and Community Collaboration

Coastal Delaware is experiencing steady population growth, and recent developments in Sussex County reflect how health care providers and community organizations are adapting & trying to grow in order to meet rising demands of healthcare infrastructure.

From expanded outpatient medical services in Millsboro to a new coworking and innovation hub for businesses in Georgetown, these projects point to a broader trend of investment aimed at improving access, collaboration, and long term sustainability across the region.

TidalHealth Plans New Imaging Facility for Sussex County

In response to the growing population in Sussex County, TidalHealth is moving ahead with plans for a dedicated outpatient imaging facility in Millsboro

Unlike traditional hospital-based services, this center would operate independently, focusing solely on diagnostic care for the community.

The facility is expected to cover around 13,000 square feet and feature a wide range of imaging technologies, from MRIs and CT scans to mammograms, ultrasounds, X-rays, and bone density testing.

The investment for the project is estimated to be between $14.6 million and $17.6 million.

The plan was introduced at the Delaware Health Resources Board meeting in December 2025, reflecting TidalHealth’s strategy to expand access to specialized healthcare as Sussex County continues to grow.

Expanding Outpatient Services in Millsboro

The proposed imaging center is only one component of TidalHealth’s larger vision for Millsboro.

Construction began in mid 2025 on the Millsboro North Campus, a roughly 150,000 square foot outpatient medical complex that will include:

  • Clinics for both primary care and medical specialties
  • Comprehensive diagnostic and imaging services
  • On-site pharmacy for prescriptions and medications
  • Expanded outpatient treatment options

These projects reflect a shift toward outpatient focused care models that are increasingly common in fast-growing regions.

By concentrating services in easily accessible facilities, health systems aim to deliver care more efficiently while keeping pace with demographic changes.

Georgetown Welcomes New Rural Innovation Hub

Health focused investment in Sussex County is not limited to clinical facilities.

In Georgetown, the Sussex County Health Coalition has opened its new Rural Innovation Hub, a coworking, and incubation space designed to support nonprofits, health initiatives, and workforce development.

Located on Sterling Avenue, the hub merges two adjacent office units to create private offices, coworking spaces, training rooms, and meeting areas.

The project represents an investment of nearly $600,000, funded primarily through a grant from the Longwood Foundation, with additional support from the coalition itself.

Leaders of the coalition explain that the hub was established to tackle persistent obstacles for service providers in Sussex County, such as the steep costs of office space and administrative overhead.

By pooling resources, the hub enables organizations to grow and collaborate without shouldering the full expense of  finding offices and independent facilities.

Currently, the hub hosts a variety of groups, including mental health services, nonprofit support programs, workforce training initiatives, and organizations focused on recovery.

It also provides flexible membership options for those needing part-time access.
