The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is looking for volunteers to help protect the state’s vulnerable beach-nesting bird populations, including the federally threatened Piping Plover and state endangered listed American Oystercatcher.

Training Opportunity in Cape Henlopen

To kick off the initiative, DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife will host a volunteer training session from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 3rd

The event will be held at the Officers Club Mess Hall in Cape Henlopen State Park, and park entrance fees will be waived for all attendees who want to attend the training.

The training includes:

  • Refreshments and a slideshow presentation
  • Program and responsibility overview
  • Optional field outing to observe shorebirds (weather permitting)
  • Binoculars available (bringing your own is preferred)

Volunteers Make a Difference

During the summer months, volunteers help DNREC monitor nesting sites and educate beachgoers about the temporary beach closures designed to protect these birds.

Their work is critical in ensuring the nesting success of these at-risk species.

Getting Involved

Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an interest form in advance, though walk-ins are always welcome.

This is a rewarding opportunity for anyone who enjoys wildlife and wants to play a part in conservation efforts at Delaware’s beaches.
