During a public workshop held on May 13, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) presented its plans for a series of upgrades to Route 16 in Milton.
These improvements aim to reduce congestion and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The proposed projects include:
- Intersection improvements at Route 16 and Route 5, funded by Royal Farms, including a new left-turn lane and a larger right of way.
- A new traffic signal at Route 16 and Mulberry Street Extended, with preliminary work already completed.
- A proposed roundabout at Route 16 and Route 30, still in design, which would shift the intersection west and convert part of Route 30 into a service road.
Community Involvement and Long-Term Goals
These upgrades are part of DelDOT’s ongoing Coastal Corridors Study, released in June 2024, and are being developed in collaboration with the Milton Transportation Advisory Group.
Future study phases will focus on:
- Analyzing traffic data to assess the potential need for a bypass route around Milton
- Evaluating whether local and through traffic is causing excessive congestion
Andrew Bing of Kramer and Associates explained, “We need to figure out if Milton is going to become so congested that it doesn’t move anyone, and whether a bypass is needed.”
Safer Streets for All Users
DelDOT is also considering creating “complete streets” within Milton, which would include:
- Narrower roadways
- Shared-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists
- Traffic calming designs to reduce speeding
These enhancements are designed to make Milton’s streets safer and more accessible for non-drivers, while maintaining traffic efficiency.
