Lewes is getting a head start on the nation’s 250th birthday, with countdowns, community events, and a growing list of symbolic tributes leading up to July 4th, 2026.

The semiquincentennial celebration is officially underway, and the city is inviting everyone to take part. A symbolic clock is now up and running on the city’s website, counting down to next year’s beloved July 4th celebrations!

Easter Weekend Kick Off

The festivities begin with two events this Easter weekend:

  • Two Lights for Tomorrow (April 18th-19th): Residents and businesses are encouraged to place two lights in their windows. Inspired by Paul Revere’s legendary ride and the lanterns in Boston’s Old North Church, the lights symbolize unity and hope.
  • Community Bonfire (April 19th, 4–6 p.m.): A free event on Savannah Beach where locals can gather to honor history and enjoy the start of a multi-year celebration.

Tulips, Traditions, and the Future

A new red-and-yellow Lewes tulip is in the works thanks to a partnership with a local florist.

The bulbs will be planted in the fall and are expected to bloom next spring—a vibrant tribute to the city’s Dutch heritage.

Looking ahead, an official Lewes 250 logo, a commemorative challenge coin, and a dedicated app are being considered as additional ways to engage the community in next year’s events.

A dedicated committee, led by Terri Malewski of the Greater Lewes Foundation, has begun mapping out the celebrations.

Rather than adding entirely new events, the goal is to enhance existing traditions with a patriotic twist.

Committee members include:

Meetings are held at 10 a.m. on the last Monday of each month at the Lewes Public Library and are open to the public if anyone wants to contribute to the various event planning.
